An online research has shown a surge in the number of Kenyans watching adult content despite the ongoing debate about morality in the wake of calls to officially recognise the LGBTQ community.

The research, based on the google metrics ranking system of websites, shows that three pornography websites have climbed to the list of the top 10 most visited sites on the internet.

Additionally, Kenyans are averagely spending 13 minutes every time they visit a porn website and visiting at least seven pages in order to find a suitable video.

Google and YouTube top the list of the most visited pages by Kenyans according to the rankings released by Semrush. At least 29 million Kenyans visit Google monthly. At the same time 17 million Kenyans visit YouTube per month.

Adult site ‘xvideos’ which has been ranked third by the study is visited by 7.4 million Kenyans per month. Twitter and Facebook close the top five list with 7.2 million and 7.05 million visits per month. However since Google, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter are the most visited websites in the world, it would be safe to say that Kenyans just love porn.

Pornhub and ‘xnxx’ have been ranked seventh and eighth in the list with 5.2 million and 3.7 million monthly visits by Kenyans.

Last year, the Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale proposed that possession or publishing pornography, in any computer system or data storage device, be made illegal.

Duale also called on the government, through the National Computer and Cybercrimes Coordination Committee, to block access to porn websites by persons within Kenya.

The proposed law — to be cited as the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes (Amendment) Act, 2020 — was set for publication and introduction in the National Assembly for consideration.

It sought to amend the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act to introduce harsh penalties for any violations.

If approved, persons found in possession of pornographic material in their phones or computer devices or publishes the same on the internet — social media platforms — will risk a fine of Sh20 million or a 20-year jail term.
