Controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie allegedly linked to the Shakahola massacre was on Tuesday freed and rearrested.

Mackenzie and six collaborators were arraigned at Malindi Law Courts in Kilifi County and freed unconditionally after the prosecution closed their miscellaneous application.

In his ruling, the magistrate noted that the first and seventh accused had applied for anticipatory bail despite not being formally charged.

“This court cannot, in its capacity, give any formal anticipatory bail as there is no formal application to hold the suspects. As it is, anticipatory bail is taken from the High Court,” the court heard.

Consequently, the seven were released unconditionally.

However, moments after their release, Mackenzie and his counterparts were recaptured by police and will be arraigned at Shanzu Law Courts to face terrorism charges.

This comes as postmortem of the over 100 bodies exhumed from Shakahola forest continues.

Meanwhile, Pastor Ezekiel Odero, who is also allegedly linked to the Shakahola deaths, will be arraigned at Shanzu Law Courts at 2pm Tuesday.
