Anwar Soussa, the CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia, has stepped down from his role after a two-year tenure.
His departure will take effect on July 31, coinciding with the conclusion of his secondment.
The announcement of his exit was made by Safaricom PLC CEO Peter Ndegwa, who assured that a successor for Anwar would be appointed in due course.
In expressing his appreciation for Anwar’s leadership and contributions to Safaricom Ethiopia, Ndegwa conveyed his heartfelt gratitude.
Throughout his time as CEO, Anwar exhibited unwavering passion and dedication, which played a pivotal role in the company’s accomplishments thus far. Ndegwa extended his best wishes to Anwar for his future endeavors as his assignment with Safaricom Ethiopia draws to a close.
Anwar Soussa joined Safaricom Ethiopia in August 2021 with the responsibility of spearheading the establishment of the organization, overseeing the setup of business operations, and orchestrating the rollout of a high-quality network.
Under his guidance, Safaricom Ethiopia successfully acquired over four million customers, achieving a network coverage spanning more than 25% of the population and encompassing 50 cities and towns.
Anwar’s efforts also led to the acquisition of a mobile financial services license, paving the way for the future launch of M-PESA services in Ethiopia.
As the inaugural CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia, Anwar Soussa successfully navigated a highly dynamic environment, marked by significant milestones.
These included assembling a competent team and overseeing the successful launch of commercial operations for the second telecommunications operator in Ethiopia.
Prior to his tenure at Safaricom Ethiopia, Anwar served as the Managing Director of Vodacom DRC and Chairperson of Vodacash (M-PESA), a position he held since 2017.
