Flamboyant politician and businessman Zaheer Jhanda has released a video of himself counting what appears to be USD14 million (Sh2 billion) in cash before quickly deleting it from his Whatsapp status.

Zaheer who is a first-time MP defeated incumbent Richard Tongi for the Nyaribari Chache parliamentary seat while running on a UDA ticket in last year’s toughly contested elections despite being of Asian origin.

His opponents claimed that Zaheer won despite not being a local because of his financial muscle. He is said to have outspent his competitors several times over using millions of shillings during his campaign.

As controversial as he is flamboyant, Zaheer has never shied from displaying his wealth. From taking pictures with wads of money to showcasing his videos, Zaheer has built his political career from showmanship.

Yet, beneath the show-off is a man with a controversial past. In 2019, Zaheer’s name featured prominently after Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum allegedly lost Sh400 million in a gold scam.

In his defence, the businessman told NTV that it was his first time to be involved in gold business and had no clue of to differentiate fake from genuine.

“This is my first time coming into this business where I am an investor, I put money, and I’m expecting the genuine gold to come from Congo so that we can be able to take it to Dubai and do business,” he said.
