The Ministry of Water has commenced the construction of two dams projected to connect at least 2000 households with water to mitigate and curb the shortage of water in the Chepalungu Sub- County in Bomet County.

Speaking during the groundbreaking of the dams, Chepalungu MP Victor Koech noted that the government in conjunction with other stakeholders is working to ensure delivering clean and safe water to Bomet Residents.

The MP noted that the Sh14 million project in Siroriondo and the Sh10 million Kataret dams are under construction and expected to be completed in the next three months in a bid to increase access to water and will be commissioned by the Water Principal Secretary.

“The government has initiated vital water projects in my constituency that are expected to curb water problems that residents from this area have been facing for the longest period now,” Koech said.

“These two projects are expected to relieve residents from walking for long distances to collect water, once the project is completed it will be launched by the Water PS in three months,” he added.

A Chepalungu resident Mr. Fred Bett lauded the government for its efforts to establish water projects in the area adding that farmers from the region are likely going to benefit.

Chepalungu sub-county is viewed as a semi-arid region experiencing long dry periods without rain. The area is the home of around 150,000 people with a majority of them practicing farming as their main source of income.

Bett informed KNA that with the construction of dams, he is likely going to intensify his fish farming and crop farming.

“We are grateful for what our government is doing in its efforts of ensuring that common mwananchi is getting clean, safe, and reliable water. With the construction of the dams, I am likely going to expand my fish ponds, and intensify my crop production by irrigation,” said Bett.
