Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has unveiled a new policy overturning the previous directive by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, which had ordered National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officers off the roads.
In a statement released today, the CS disclosed that the decision came after discussions with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.
“Having consulted with my Interior and National Coordination colleague, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, we are going to establish a mechanism where the previous directive to remove NTSA from enforcement will be vacated and a collaborative regime between NTSA and NPS will be put in place for a more efficient enforcement,” Murkomen stated.
He further elaborated that NTSA officers will now work in collaboration with the traffic police, departing from the order issued by Uhuru in 2018.
This policy shift follows a tragic accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway on Monday involving a Kenyatta University bus and a trailer. The accident claimed the lives of 11 students, with 20 others sustaining severe injuries.
Additionally, on the same day, another accident in Bomet County led to the loss of five lives.
