Embakasi West Member of Parliament Mark Mwenje alleged on Saturday, June 22, that Lesley Muturi, the son of Attorney General Justin Muturi, had been arrested under suspicious circumstances.
In a widely circulated video clip, the Jubilee Party legislator accused police officers of hijacking Lesley and demanded his immediate release.
Mwenje recounted that he was part of a convoy with Lesley when the incident occurred. According to Mwenje, the young man was intercepted by individuals wearing police combat uniforms while driving through Lavington Kilimani.
“We are here in Lavington Kilimani. My friend Lesley Muturi, son of AG Justin Muturi, has just been hijacked by police here on the road,” Mwenje stated in the video.
The MP further explained that he had been following Lesley’s car closely when it was suddenly stopped by the suspected police officers.
Expressing his concern and frustration, Mwenje directly addressed the officers, saying, “The police who have taken him, we are informing you to release him.”
In a call for public assistance, Mwenje urged the youth, particularly those from Generation Z, to help locate Lesley. He admitted that despite his efforts, he had been unable to determine where Lesley had been taken.
This incident came amidst a backdrop of rising tensions in Kenya, highlighted by the arrest of over 50,000 Kenyans who joined X Spaces to demand the release of Billy Simani, also known as Crazy Nairobian.
Simani had been arrested in connection with ongoing protests against the Finance Bill, although the reasons behind Lesley’s disappearance remained unclear.
Mwenje expressed his strong belief that the police were responsible for Lesley’s detention.
“The cops are telling us they don’t know where he is. The guys who have taken him are cops, and I am the one who’s seen it,” he said.
He added that Lesley was taken away in a white Toyota Land Cruiser, and he had successfully recorded the vehicle’s license plate number.
