Lavington United Church has cancelled a fundraiser that was to be graced by First Lady Rachel Ruto on Sunday, June 30, following warnings from youths against the move. The event, aimed at raising funds for the completion of a sanctuary, had drawn significant backlash after the invitation card leaked on social media.
The church leadership received numerous messages urging them to cancel the event and refrain from inviting politicians to their pulpits. One message to the church’s leadership, seen by BRK, reads, “Good evening, Rev. Mutahi. I’m the person who started the campaign to get rid of politicians from the church pulpit in Kenya. I see here that you have invited Mrs. Rachel Ruto for a fundraiser. This message is to notify you that we are coming for the fundraiser too. God bless you.”
In response, the church announced on Friday evening that the event was cancelled and that First Lady Rachel Ruto would no longer be attending any event at their compound on Sunday.
In a related development, an ACK church in Eldoret also cancelled a fundraiser event scheduled for the same Sunday, which was to be attended by at least three politicians.
