Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie has issued a public apology to Kenyans following his recent controversial remarks that sparked widespread anger. In parliament, Kiarie had claimed that some of the photos from last week’s demonstrations were doctored, alleging that Photoshop was used to make them appear legitimate.
Facing significant backlash on social media, Kiarie felt the pressure from enraged citizens and decided to offer a heartfelt, handwritten apology.
“I truly apologize for comments I made regarding the protest and the authenticity of certain images. In the heat of the moment, during the debate on the Finance Bill, my words were unnecessary, misguided, and insensitive. I have definitely learned a lot from this and also from all the active listening I have done since,” Kiarie wrote.
In his apology, he also praised the younger generation for their active participation and courage in opposing the Finance Bill. “I appreciate and celebrate the courage and creativity shown by the younger generation in advocating for change through innovative channels and platforms including social media and other emerging technologies.”
Kiarie’s apology comes at a critical time, with protests against the Finance Bill expected to intensify and a large turnout anticipated for the upcoming demonstrations.
