Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s bid for the presidency in 2027 has gained significant momentum following a pledge of support from former Kitui governor Charity Ngilu. On Saturday, Ngilu committed to persuading Raila Odinga, a long-time political ally, to endorse Kalonzo as the Azimio coalition’s presidential candidate.
Ngilu made her announcement during the funeral ceremony of educationist Agnetta Peter in Katuuni village, Mwingi North. Agnetta, who succumbed to cancer, had served as Ngilu’s education chief officer during her tenure as Kitui governor and had previously held positions as a high school principal and county TSC director.
“We belong to Azimio. Our former presidential candidate has looked elsewhere. Raila Odinga has exited the local political arena. That leaves one of our own, Kalonzo, only a heartbeat from the throne,” Ngilu said.
Raila Odinga is set to contest for the African Union Commission chairmanship in February next year. If successful, he will serve in that role until 2028, one year after the 2027 presidential elections. This potential exit from the local political scene opens the door for Kalonzo to take the lead within the Azimio coalition.
“I will go and talk to him and ask him to declare Kalonzo the presidential candidate. Our very own can be at the helm or does it break any bone?”
