The contentious Finance Bill, 2024 has successfully passed the Second Reading in the National Assembly, with 204 Members of Parliament voting in favor.
Speaker Moses Wetangula announced during the Thursday evening voting session that 115 MPs opposed the Bill, and no legislators abstained from the vote.
Speaker Wetangula further outlined the next steps for the Bill. It will come before the entire House again on Tuesday next week, where amendments to the Bill will be introduced and each clause will be voted on individually. Following this, the Bill will proceed to a Third Reading, during which the House will take a final vote to either approve or reject it.
Should there be any disagreements on the Bill or any proposed amendments, it will be referred to a mediation committee. This committee’s role will be to develop a version of the Bill that the House can consider and vote on. The House will then debate and vote on the mediated version of the Bill.
