Kitui South MP Rachel Nyamai has urged President William Ruto to disregard the ongoing demonstrations against the Finance Bill by Gen Z. Speaking on the floor of the National Assembly, Nyamai dismissed the youth protests, suggesting that the demonstrators lacked genuine intentions.
Nyamai asserted that many of the young protestors were on the streets mainly to gain attention on TikTok rather than to oppose the Finance Bill. She shared that a student she sponsors had communicated this sentiment to her after taking part in the protests.
According to Nyamai, the student expressed concerns about the Finance Bill, particularly the proposed taxes on motor vehicle circulation and bread. However, Nyamai pointed out that since these taxes had been removed, there was no longer any reason for the student to continue protesting.
“I asked her why she was on the street, and the girl told me she was not on the street concerning the bill; she told me she was there for TikTok,” Nyamai stated.
In light of this, Nyamai expressed her support for the controversial Finance Bill, highlighting the success of the 2023 Finance Act.
Her comments come amidst widespread protests across various parts of the country, with Kenyans opposing the adoption of the Finance Bill of 2024. Many young Kenyans took to the streets, arguing that despite several clauses being removed from the bill, punitive measures still remained, prompting their rejection of the entire bill.
