Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi is one of only two MPs from the Mt Kenya region who opposed the Finance Bill 2024. Alongside Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, Koimburi listened to his constituents’ concerns and took a stand against the bill.
Koimburi accused other Mt Kenya MPs of accepting bribes to support the controversial bill, which has sparked nationwide protests, particularly among Gen Z and millennials. According to Koimburi, these MPs were bribed with KSh 2 million each to vote in favor of the bill.
“We were offered money, you saw how they carried money in sacks. We were told that for every yes vote, we would receive KSh 2 million,” Koimburi revealed to congregants at AIPCA Ndururumo Church in Juja constituency on Sunday.
Koimburi explained that his conscience would not allow him to accept the bribe and betray the voters who elected him. He emphasized the importance of representing the people’s interests over personal gain.
Additionally, Koimburi issued a stern warning to the government about the potential consequences if the Finance Bill is passed and signed into law by President William Ruto. “If this bill passes, the youth may burn the country,” he cautioned, stressing the urgent need for the government to reconsider its position on the bill.
The Finance Bill 2024 aims to raise $2.7 billion in additional taxes, a move that critics argue will significantly increase the cost of living and production, further burdening already economically challenged citizens. The opposition to the bill continues to grow, with countrywide protests expected to intensify.
