ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has accused National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula of biased conduct during the heated debate on the Finance Bill 2024. Speaking on behalf of Raila Odinga’s Azimio, Sifuna leveled allegations of procedural irregularities and unfair treatment against Wetangula.
In a press briefing on Thursday, Sifuna criticized Wetangula for what he described as micromanaging the debate akin to a DJ at a disco matanga in Matisi. He accused the Speaker of personally controlling the microphone, frequently interrupting members’ contributions, and hindering the natural flow of discussion.
“Moses Wetangula is running the house like a DJ at a disco matanga in Matisi. He is controlling the mic himself, shutting the mic at any time and interjecting every time a member is making a contribution. He should let the debate flow,” lamented Sifuna.
Joining Sifuna’s criticism were Senators Ledama Ole Kina and Godfrey Osotsi, who echoed concerns over what they perceived as biased treatment favoring the government’s stance. Osotsi went further to denounce Wetangula’s management style, likening it to overseeing a baraza in Kamukunji Market, where impartiality and fairness are disregarded.
“Moses Wetangula is running the National Assembly like a baraza in Kamukunji Market, where there is no appreciation of the fact that a speaker should be impartial, independent and must be fair,” Osotsi stated.
The exclusion of Senators from the National Assembly chambers, traditionally accessible to the public during debates, has exacerbated tensions within the assembly. Sifuna questioned this move, emphasizing that MPs should not be isolated from the public, who elected them to represent their interests.
“Why should members of parliament be afraid of members of the public? These are the people who elected us,” Sifuna emphasized, highlighting the importance of transparency and inclusivity in parliamentary proceedings.
