Activist Boniface Mwangi was reportedly arrested by police officers on Thursday while protesting at the Kenyatta Market in Nairobi. Mwangi’s lawyer confirmed that he was taken to the Central Police Station. Mwangi, along with fellow activist Hussein Khalid of Haki Africa, was protesting against recent killings during anti-government demonstrations.
The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) called for their release and pledged to continue advocating for the arrest of officers responsible for the deaths of innocent Kenyans. “Free Boniface Mwangi and Hussein Khalid. We won’t stop demanding that the officers responsible for the deaths of innocent Kenyans be held accountable,” stated the KHRC.
Prior to his arrest, Mwangi was seen marching through the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) with other protesters, carrying large placards and crosses, and wearing white T-shirts. The protests were disrupted by police, who intervened and began dispersing the demonstrators, leading to Mwangi’s arrest.
This incident follows an earlier one where protesting youths reportedly stormed Mwangi’s offices, accusing him of orchestrating the recent demonstrations in the country.
