Como have announced the appointment of Cesc Fabregas as head coach after he completed his coaching badges.
The former Arsenal and Chelsea player, 37, initially served as a caretaker manager and then as the No. 2 as Como returned to Serie A after a 21-year absence.
Fabregas, who is also part-owner, will now lead the club in the top flight next season after signing a four-year contract.
“I am so happy to be starting this season as head coach and I thank the ownership group for trusting me with this position. I share the ambitions of the group and believe this is just the start of where this club can go. It’s going to be a tough and important season but myself and the rest of the coaching staff are ready and we all believe,” Fabregas said.
Mirwan Suwarso, official representative of the ownership group, added: “It’s an honour for us to officially appoint Cesc as head coach. The impact of his knowledge, experience, and passion is already evident in the success of last season and the evolution of our playing style. We believe that this is just the start though and look forward to continuing working with Cesc this season and for many years to come.”
Como, owned by the Hartono brothers, are currently the richest club in the Italian league.
As they look to maintain their status in Serie A next season, they have turned to the free agency market for help.
Como are also on the verge of completing the signings of Raphael Varane from Manchester United and Pau Lopez from Marseille.
Just five years ago, the club was languishing in the fourth tier of Italian football, having recovered from bankruptcy. They have since undergone one of the most remarkable resurgences in recent memory.
In 2022, World Cup-winning midfielder Fabregas arrived at the club on a free transfer from Monaco, playing the final season of his illustrious career before becoming assistant manager and part-owner this season.
