The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Ingonga, has stated that the CCTV footage submitted as evidence in the case of a police officer allegedly responsible for the fatal shooting of Rex Masai, the first victim in the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests, does not clearly identify the individual who fired the shot.
Ingonga urged anyone with relevant information, especially the witnesses who took Rex Masai to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, to come forward and provide statements to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA). He noted that the key witness who was with Masai during the incident, and who informed the deceased’s parents, has not yet provided a statement.
In a statement , Ingonga emphasized the difficulty in prosecuting the involved police officer if key witnesses do not come forward to formally lodge complaints or provide statements.
