Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has issued a stern warning to President William Ruto, cautioning him to urgently address the grievances of the youth to prevent potential political upheaval.
Speaking at the signing ceremony of the IEBC Bill into law at KICC, Kalonzo highlighted the pressing concerns raised by Kenya’s youth, particularly Generation Z, regarding governance reforms. He emphasized that the current administration risks being ousted from power if it fails to heed these demands.
“If we are not careful, the Gen Z will remove all of us from power because they insist they are ready to lead now, not in the future,” Kalonzo asserted, acknowledging the generational shift in leadership expectations.
The signing of the IEBC Bill follows widespread protests by Generation Z, advocating for comprehensive reforms and greater accountability within the government. The demonstrations tragically resulted in the deaths of over 40 protesters and injuries to hundreds more, intensifying public outrage against the authorities.
Kalonzo expressed support for the protesters’ right to peaceful assembly and criticized the heavy-handed response by security forces under the leadership of Inspector General Japheth Koome. He urged President Ruto to take decisive action, including the dismissal of IG Koome and the withdrawal of military personnel from civilian areas.
Furthermore, Kalonzo urged the president to accelerate the implementation of recommendations from the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, which he co-chaired. He underscored that the IEBC bill’s enactment was just one step toward addressing broader national concerns and restoring stability.
As tensions continue to simmer and protests persist, Kalonzo’s admonition underscores the growing urgency for the government to engage meaningfully with the youth and address their grievances to safeguard national harmony and governance integrity.
