A police officer is recovering from gunshot wounds after accidentally shooting himself in the leg while battling muggers in the Lunga Lunga slums of Nairobi.
According to police reports, the incident occurred when the officer inadvertently pulled the trigger and shot himself in the left toe while responding to distress calls from locals. The calls came in around 9 p.m. on Monday, reporting that a gang was terrorizing and robbing residents in the Gakoe area.
The gang, armed with knives, was targeting pedestrians and robbing them of cash and valuables. When the officers arrived, they managed to corner one suspect who was armed with a knife. As one officer cocked his weapon to order the suspect to surrender, he accidentally pulled the trigger while wrestling the suspect, causing the pistol to discharge into the ground.
The bullet pierced through the officer’s shoe, injuring his toe. Despite the injury, other officers at the scene managed to arrest the suspect, who was armed with a knife.
The injured constable was rushed to the hospital and is in stable condition. The suspect is currently detained and is likely to face charges of robbery with violence.
