Standard Media Group radio employees have followed through on their threat to strike due to salary arrears dating back to June 2023.
Employees from Radio Maisha, Spice FM, Berur FM, and Vybez Radio had warned on June 28 that they would go off the air if management did not address their unpaid salaries.
With management failing to respond, the journalists walked out of their workstations and gathered at the staff cafeteria.
All radio stations were left playing music without presenters on air as employees demanded that management honor their contractual agreements.
The radio employees stated they had not been paid for the months from June to August 2023. In 2024, they had only been paid for February.
In their demand letter dated June 2024, the journalists requested that their June 2024 salary be paid by Tuesday, July 2.
“Kindly note that in the event of non-payment as proposed above, all programming will be off air on July 3 on all 4 radio stations until our plight is addressed and a commitment from your end is issued in writing,” the employees warned
For the other months, the employees asked Standard Media Group to pay 30 percent of the arrears each month until the full amount was cleared.
