The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) is set to launch a Premium Class service on the Madaraka Express trains following the recent arrival of four luxury coaches at the port of Mombasa on Monday.
Confirming the arrival of the new coaches, KRC announced they also received four first-class and ten economy coaches, along with a dining car and a power car. This development promises to enhance services on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) route between Mombasa and Nairobi.
“The much-awaited Premium Class Coaches have arrived,” stated the Corporation, highlighting that these coaches will feature fully reclining convertible seats to ensure passenger comfort. Moreover, the seating configuration in the Premium Class will allow passengers to choose their facing direction during travel.
The introduction of the Premium Class service comes after KRC previously adjusted its fares upwards several months ago. The price of an economy seat between Nairobi and Mombasa was raised from Sh1,000 to Sh500, while the cost of a first-class seat increased from Sh3,000 to Sh4,500. KRC attributed these fare adjustments to operational reasons, particularly citing rising fuel prices.
With the arrival of these new coaches, KRC aims to further elevate the travel experience on the Madaraka Express, catering to varying passenger preferences and needs along one of Kenya’s key transport corridors.
