A gun dealer suspect who escaped from the Karen police station in Nairobi has been re-arrested. The suspect was apprehended in the Kasarani area on Friday, August 2, as he attempted to evade capture. His dramatic escape on the evening of August 1 had left one police officer injured.
The suspect had been initially arrested on August 1 after police discovered a significant cache of arms and ammunition at his residence. He was apprehended at a restaurant in Karen, where an expired firearm license was found. A search of his Mark X car revealed an array of weapons, including a Sig Sauer pistol, two Canik pistols, six empty magazines, and 775 assorted bullets. Further investigation at his Southlands Estate home uncovered a shotgun and 210 additional bullets.
Despite producing a civilian firearm certificate, the document was found to be expired as of February 21, 2023. Consequently, the decision was made to detain him. During his escort to the cells, he requested to retrieve a heavy sweater from his car, which was parked nearby. The request was granted as he was not handcuffed at the time.
However, once inside the car, the suspect locked himself in and refused to exit, prompting officers and the station guard to take action. The guard closed the station gate in an attempt to prevent the suspect from fleeing, but the suspect drove through the gate at high speed, causing damage but avoiding gunfire.
Following a manhunt and intelligence gathering, the suspect was eventually located and re-arrested in Kasarani.
