Suna East MP Junet Mohammed has asserted that he is the rightful opposition leader, citing his role as the Minority Leader in the National Assembly. Junet argued that since the Office of Official Opposition is not explicitly defined in the Constitution, it is logical for the Leader of the Minority Party in the National Assembly to be recognized as the Opposition Leader.
“As it stands now, I am the official opposition leader because I am the Minority Leader, and you cannot take away the job God has given me. Those in the opposition should know I am their leader,” he stated.
This declaration follows Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s own claim to the title of opposition leader. Musyoka made his statement after the launch of Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission chairperson seat, affirming that Azimio la Umoja would remain intact even with Raila’s departure.
“Yes, I am ready to be the leader of the Official Opposition. This is the team. You will see the Opposition like never before. We may be light in numbers in Parliament, but outside we have the people of Kenya,” Musyoka said during a press conference that coincided with the State House launch of Raila’s bid.
