Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has vowed to protect Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from any impeachment efforts by the legislative houses.
Moses Kuria made this declaration during a funeral service for Ngugi Njoroge in Subukia on Wednesday, August 7.
Despite his differences with Gachagua, Kuria emphatically stated that he would not allow legislators to remove the Deputy President from office. “I will not agree for the Deputy President to be impeached. As long as I’m alive, I will not allow his impeachment,” Kuria asserted.
He reiterated his stance in Swahili, “As long as I am alive, sitakubali akuwe impeached. I have released him on free bond, hakuna shida.”
This comes after Deputy President Gachagua revealed on Sunday, August 4, that he was aware of a plot by some leaders to impeach him, although he appeared unfazed by the threat. “I hear they wanted to impeach me, but they did not have the numbers to do so. Now I hear that they are saying with Raila and his people in government they have the numbers to oust me if they unite,” Gachagua told journalists.
The impeachment discussions emerge amid reports of strained relations and a less than amicable working relationship between Gachagua and President William Ruto. In June, some Mount Kenya leaders indicated their intention to announce a new leader to represent the region’s interests, further fueling speculation about political instability.
Kuria’s commitment to defend Gachagua highlights the complex dynamics and alliances within Kenya’s political landscape as the nation navigates its leadership challenges.
