The election of John Chebochok as the Toror Tea Factory Director in the Ainamoi Zone, Kericho, has been nullified with immediate effect. This decision comes in the wake of a BBC documentary that exposed Chebochok as a serial sex pest who preyed on female workers, offering work benefits and employment opportunities in exchange for sexual favors.
Despite the serious allegations against him, Chebochok was allowed to contest the elective seat and emerged victorious, defeating two other candidates. However, his win sparked widespread outrage among human rights organizations and the general public. In response, a Kericho court intervened, halting his swearing-in ceremony.
The court’s decision reflects the growing intolerance for sexual misconduct and the demand for accountability from individuals in positions of power. The nullification of Chebochok’s election is seen as a significant move towards protecting workers’ rights and ensuring ethical conduct within the workplace.
