Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has softened his previous hardline stance on the broad-based government and his criticism of Raila Odinga’s alliance with President William Ruto. Musyoka now expresses a readiness to work with Odinga to strengthen the Azimio coalition and is focused on building a powerful alliance for the 2027 presidential race.
Once firmly opposed to ODM’s cabinet nominations, Musyoka’s position has evolved. He now signals a shift in approach: “We must continue to engage with Raila Odinga as it stands. He is the leader of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, and we need to consider his role until we decide whether to release him for an AU position,” Musyoka stated.
Amid ongoing speculation about his next steps and internal rifts within the Azimio coalition, Musyoka is preparing to challenge President Ruto in the 2027 elections. He emphasizes the need for a new political alignment to mount a successful campaign. “When the time comes, we will evaluate our options. The goal is to form a strong coalition capable of challenging Kenya Kwanza,” he added.
At the Oslo Center Africa Youth Forum, Musyoka spoke on the role of youth in national dialogue and called for justice for victims of recent anti-government protests led by Gen-Z activists. The forum highlighted Kenya’s role as a regional model for upholding constitutional rights and democracy.
“The foundation of our progress is in Kenya, and the greatest resource is our young people,” said Chairman of the Oslo Center, Finn Jarle.
Musyoka also hinted at an upcoming Azimio council meeting, expected to be chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, to address and resolve issues within the coalition.
