The Registrar of Political Parties, Ann Nderitu, has confirmed Hassan Omar’s appointment as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General.
This decision comes after the removal of Cleophas Malala, who had been serving in the role in an acting capacity since February 2023.
In a letter obtained by the Star, Nderitu stated that she had received official communication from the party regarding the changes.
She instructed the party to hold elections within the next six months to establish permanent officeholders, as all current officials are serving on an interim basis.
“The office also notes that most of the current UDA officials are holding positions on interim basis,” Nderitu noted.
“In line with good governance practices and the mandate of this office, the party is hereby directed to finalize the party elections as soon as practically possible but not later than a hundred and eighty (180) days from the date of this letter.”
Nderitu also directed UDA to publicize the change of Secretary General in at least one daily newspaper and on its official website.
“Pursuant to Section 20 of the Political Parties Act, 2011 the party is guided to publish the change of the official in at least one daily newspaper having nationwide circulation and in the official party website and notify the office for further processing,” she stated.
On August 2, 2024, the ruling party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) revoked Cleophas Malala’s appointment as interim Secretary General, paving the way for Hassan Omar’s confirmation.
Malala was kicked out of office by a faction of UDA that identified itself as the ‘founding members of UDA’.
Led by Lawyer Joe Khalende, the group accused Malala of hindering the party’s progress and the Broad-Based Government initiative led by party leader President William Ruto and his ODM counterpart, Raila Odinga.
