At least 24 students at the United States International University (USIU) have fallen victim to a scam perpetrated by one of their lecturers, who duped them out of KSh10,872,000 for a non-existent school trip to England.
The lecturer, Prof. Moses Joshua Onyango, reportedly devised the scheme late last year, instructing his students to raise KSh453,000 each for an educational trip to the UK, with the payments collected in installments. The students, eager for the opportunity, diligently paid the $3,000 (approximately KSh453,000) each, expecting to travel in April.
However, once the payments were completed, the professor allegedly disappeared. “The professor suddenly became hostile and even asked us to leave the WhatsApp group when we started asking about the trip,” one student recounted.
It soon emerged that the university had no knowledge of the trip and that the lecturer had been dismissed by the time the students finished their payments. The school management has confirmed the incident and stated that they are actively investigating and following up on the matter.
