A group of 48 Members of Parliament from the Mt Kenya region and its diaspora has declared their support for Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, signaling a significant political shift in the region.
This endorsement places Kindiki at the forefront of the battle for Mt Kenya’s political leadership, a contest that is expected to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
The MPs, who met in Nyahururu on Thursday, resolved to back Kindiki as their key liaison to the Executive on matters of regional development.
Some of the prominent leaders present at the meeting included Mwangi Kiunjuri (Laikipia East), Kimani Ichung’wah (Kikuyu), Betty Maina (Murang’a), Karen Nyamu (Nominated Senator), and Alice Ng’ang’a (Thika Town), among others.
“We, as elected leaders from this region and its diaspora, unanimously resolve that our link to the National Government be the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Prof. Kithure Kindiki,” the group stated.
This move is seen as a challenge to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who would traditionally serve as the region’s primary representative in the national government.
Kindiki’s growing influence has already attracted 20 additional MPs from Mt Kenya East, who endorsed him as their political leader earlier in the week.
During the meeting, the MPs highlighted the need for a focal point to channel their region’s interests and priorities to the government. They argued that previous efforts to consolidate development had been hindered by disorganized political ambitions.
“The Mt. Kenya Region has suffered from high-stakes politics centered around individual ambitions rather than the articulation of our constituents’ interests,” they said.
The group also criticized past political pressures, which they claimed forced them to support personal ambitions at the expense of the region’s development.
Looking forward, the MPs agreed to hold regular meetings to assess progress and identify key issues affecting the region.
They also announced plans to form a coordinating committee to maintain a direct link with the Executive, ensuring that their legislative and developmental goals align with the needs of their constituents.
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to regional unity, emphasizing the importance of pursuing development within the framework of national unity.
“We are one indivisible people of Kenya and must always put our country first,” the MPs concluded.
