Ethiopian Airlines has announced the immediate suspension of its flights to and from Asmara, Eritrea, effective September 3, 2024. The decision, disclosed in a statement on Monday, was made due to challenging operating conditions in Eritrea that are beyond the airline’s control.
In the statement, Ethiopian Airlines expressed regret over the disruption and assured affected customers that alternative arrangements would be made. “We regret to inform our valued customers that, due to very difficult operating conditions in Eritrea, we have had to suspend our flights to Asmara starting today,” the airline said.
For those impacted by the suspension, Ethiopian Airlines will rebook passengers on other airlines at no additional cost or provide a full refund for their tickets. The airline has committed to assisting affected travelers and apologizes for any inconvenience caused.
This announcement follows a recent development in which the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority had informed Ethiopian Airlines of a flight suspension notice, effective September 30, 2024. The airline received this notice via a letter dated July 21, 2024, but the reasons for the suspension were not specified. Ethiopian Airlines is currently seeking clarification on the matter.
Previously, Ethiopian Airlines operated five weekly flights to Asmara.
