Suba South – A fire that ravaged a dormitory at John Mbadi Oma Mixed Secondary School early Wednesday morning is under investigation. The blaze, which broke out around 7 a.m., destroyed the building’s roof and consumed numerous personal belongings.
Suba Deputy County Commissioner Sebastian Okiring reported that 65 students were residing in the dormitory at the time of the fire. The flames reportedly spread rapidly, fueled by mattresses and mosquito nets within the dormitory.
“The entire roof of the dormitory was lost and will need to be replaced,” Okiring said. “Experts will assess the structural integrity of the remaining walls and provide further recommendations. Additionally, around 60 boxes containing students’ belongings were destroyed.”
Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Initial findings indicate that a solar panel and batteries installed on the roof were not involved, as the fire started at the opposite end of the building from where the batteries were located.
Despite the setback, classes resumed later in the day. Okiring assured that the school will continue its operations and called on well-wishers to assist the affected students.
“We urge all students to remain calm as the investigation proceeds. We are actively seeking support from the community to aid those impacted by this unfortunate event.” Okiring
