Nairobi – A tragic incident occurred early Friday morning in Nairobi’s Shauri Moyo area, where the walls of a sewer line under construction collapsed, resulting in the deaths of at least four workers. The accident happened around 5 am, trapping seven workers under the rubble.
Emergency teams arrived at the scene shortly after the alarm was raised. Despite their swift response, only three workers were rescued from the debris. The remaining four were confirmed dead.
National Police Service spokesperson Dr. Resila Onyango reported that the rescue operations, led by county government personnel and Kenya Red Cross teams, were challenging but crucial. “The workers were in the process of excavating a sewer line when the walls collapsed. Sadly, four have lost their lives while three have been successfully rescued,” Dr. Onyango said.
Rescue efforts involved the Nairobi City County Fire Brigade, NMS Ambulance, Kenya Red Cross, and Kenya Police. The three survivors were transported to Mama Lucy Hospital for treatment. The Kenya Red Cross expressed gratitude for the joint operation, highlighting the collaborative effort of various emergency services in managing the crisis.
The collapse underscores the inherent risks in construction projects and the need for stringent safety measures to protect workers. The incident is under investigation as authorities work to determine the cause of the collapse and prevent future occurrences.
