Jambojet has suspended all flights to and from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) due to the ongoing strike by aviation workers protesting the government’s deal with Indian firm Adani Group.
In an official statement, the airline urged its customers to hold off on any flight plans involving JKIA until further notice.
“Jambojet wishes to notify guests of flight disruptions due to the ongoing strike by airport workers. All our flights scheduled to land and take off from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) are hereby on hold until further notice,” read part of the statement.
On Wednesday, numerous passengers were left stranded at the airport as workers walked out in protest of the controversial deal. Long queues formed as boarding and takeoff operations were delayed, causing widespread frustration among travelers.
The strike has been escalating for weeks, following a notice issued by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) last month opposing the leasing of JKIA to Adani Group. Attempts at negotiations between the union and government officials have since broken down.
Aviation workers have expressed strong opposition to the deal, fearing job losses and negative impacts on local workers. However, the government has stated that Adani Group’s role will be limited to investing in the construction of a second runway and refurbishing existing facilities at the airport.
