Mohamed Abduba Dida, who previously ran for Kenya’s presidency, is currently serving a prison sentence at the Big Muddy River Correctional Center in Illinois.
Dida, known for his 2013 and 2017 presidential campaigns and his background in education, was convicted of serious offenses including stalking and violating a restraining order.
According to his inmate records, Dida, identified by inmate number Y51285, was sentenced on two separate charges.
He received a 2-year sentence for stalking and transmitting threats, and a 5-year sentence for aggravated stalking and violating a restraining order. Both charges are linked to incidents that occurred in McLean County, Illinois.
Dida was admitted to the Illinois Department of Corrections on November 18, 2022, and is projected to be eligible for parole in April 2025, with his full discharge scheduled for April 2029.
Dida’s political career in Kenya was marked by his unconventional approach and emphasis on education reform.
In the 2013 presidential election, he garnered 52,848 votes, representing 0.43% of the total. In 2017, he received 38,004 votes, or 0.25%.
Despite his limited electoral success, Dida was recognized for his advocacy for moral and just leadership.
His current incarceration in the U.S. contrasts sharply with his public image in Kenya, where he was seen as a champion for the marginalized and a critic of the political establishment.
