Warner Bros. is quietly exploring the potential of bringing George R.R. Martin’s expansive fantasy world to the big screen, as sources reveal early development on a new film set in Westeros. Although there’s no filmmaker, cast, or writer attached yet, the studio seems eager to introduce the Game of Thrones universe to cinemas, marking a potential shift in how the property is managed.
This interest in a Game of Thrones film recalls discussions from the show’s original run, when creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss initially envisioned concluding the series with a trilogy of feature films instead of a final TV season. Martin himself was open to the idea, revealing back in 2014 that movie concepts had been considered. However, HBO resisted, preferring to keep Game of Thrones exclusive to its network.
In the years since the series ended, Warner Bros. and HBO have experienced numerous executive changes, with HBO now led by Casey Bloys and Warner Bros. under Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy. The shift in leadership and the evolving film and TV landscape have blurred the lines between what defines a TV or movie property, with major franchises now adapting across mediums. For example, The Batman spinoff series The Penguin, the planned Harry Potter series, and Warner Bros.’ new Lord of the Rings projects all demonstrate a trend of expanding universes through both film and television.
Following House of the Dragon—a popular Game of Thrones prequel that premiered in 2022 and recently wrapped its second season—HBO is also set to release A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in 2025. Additional prequels are in development, though storylines set after the original Game of Thrones series remain unexplored, leaving fans to wonder if this new project might finally delve into a post-series Westeros.
Warner Bros. appears committed to pushing the boundaries of Martin’s universe, signaling that Westeros may soon invade cinemas, giving fans another chance to immerse themselves in the fantasy realm in a whole new way.
