Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui claimed the women’s title at the New York Marathon, crossing the line in 2 hours, 24 minutes, and 35 seconds.
Hellen Obiri, last year’s winner and an Olympic bronze medalist, came in just 14 seconds behind, while fellow Kenyan Vivian Cheruiyot completed the all-Kenyan podium with a time of 2:25:21.
Chepkirui, who set a personal best of 2:17:29 in Valencia last year, showcased her skill on the challenging New York course, besting Obiri in her first New York race.
Obiri, who previously made history by winning both the Boston and New York Marathons in 2023, was aiming to defend her title.
The trio ran a tactical race, bidding their time and letting Teferi do the donkey work and set the pace.
By the 30km mark, only five women were left in contention with Obiri and Chepkirui taking charge as Teferi faded.
The Kenyans shook of the Ethiopian past 35km and going into the business end of the race it was certain that all three women were going to secure podium finishes.
In the men’s division, Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands clinched victory with a time of 2:07:39.
The Somali-born athlete narrowly outpaced Kenya’s Evans Chebet by six seconds, with Albert Korir completing the top three in 2:08:00.
Two-time winner Geoffrey Kamworor finished fifth, while last year’s champion, Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola, came in fourth.
