Prominent car dealer and social media personality Joseph Kairo Wambui, popularly known as Khalif Kairo, was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of defrauding clients by obtaining money under false pretenses.
Kairo was apprehended at one of his car yards in Nairobi, according to Kasarani Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer Justus Ombati. The arrest followed accusations that he received millions from a buyer with the promise of delivering high-end cars but allegedly failed to fulfill the agreement or refund the money.
“Yes, he is here. We arrested him today after he pocketed millions from a buyer and has been elusive about either refunding the money or delivering the cars. There are more complainants who have come forward, and we have opened a file on him,” said Ombati in a statement to Nation newspaper
The primary complainant in the case alleges that Kairo defrauded them of Sh26 million. Police further revealed that Kairo is being held alongside three of his employees at Kasarani Police Station as investigations continue.
The incident has prompted other alleged victims to step forward, adding to the accusations against the dealer. Investigators are now piecing together evidence to determine the full extent of the alleged fraud.
Kairo, a well-known figure in Kenya’s car import business, is facing significant scrutiny as police examine additional claims linked to his dealings.
