The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced adjustments to fuel prices for the December 2024 to January 2025 cycle, reflecting slight decreases in the cost of Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene.
According to the monthly review released on Saturday, December 14, EPRA confirmed a reduction of Ksh 4.37 per litre for Super Petrol, Ksh 3.00 per litre for Diesel, and Ksh 3.00 per litre for Kerosene.
The new prices will be effective from midnight, December 15, and will remain in place for the next 30 days.
In Nairobi, the prices will now stand at Ksh 176.29 per litre for Super Petrol, Ksh 165.06 per litre for Diesel, and Ksh 148.39 per litre for Kerosene.
In Mombasa, where prices are traditionally lower, Super Petrol will retail at Ksh 173.05 per litre, Diesel at Ksh 161.82 per litre, and Kerosene at Ksh 145.15 per litre.
The adjusted prices include a 16% Value Added Tax (VAT) as required under the Finance Act 2023, the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2020, and revised excise duty rates adjusted for inflation, in accordance with Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020.
EPRA attributed the price changes to shifts in global fuel costs. The average landed cost of imported Super Petrol decreased by 4.46%, from USD 641.14 per cubic metre in October 2024 to USD 612.53 in November 2024.
Conversely, Diesel costs increased by 5.76%, from USD 608.61 per cubic metre to USD 643.69 per cubic metre. Kerosene also experienced a 1.87% rise, moving from USD 648.15 per cubic metre to USD 660.30 per cubic metre over the same period.
EPRA noted that the adjustments are part of its mandate to regulate petroleum prices, ensuring that importers recover their costs while protecting consumers from excessive pricing.
The authority highlighted that the new prices are designed to balance reasonable consumer costs with fair business practices for importers and retailers.
The new pricing will remain in effect until January 14, 2025.
