President William Ruto has appointed Ahmed Issack Hassan, the former Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), as the new Chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
The appointment was announced in a gazette notice dated December 5, 2024, and follows Hassan’s nomination for the position last month. He succeeds Anne Makori, the outgoing IPOA Chair.
The announcement stated that the President exercised his authority under section 11(8) of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority Act to make the appointment. Hassan, who served as IEBC Chairperson from November 2011 to October 2016, now takes on a critical oversight role in policing.
President Ruto also made other significant appointments to key government commissions. Charles Orinda Dulo was named the new Chairperson of the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ), with former Starehe MP Charles Njagua Kanyi, popularly known as Jaguar, and Dorothy Jemator Kimengech appointed as board members of the commission.
The IPOA board saw new additions, including Ann Wanjiku Mwangi, Dr. Micah Onyiego Nyakego, Boniface Kipkemoi Samati, Dr. Annette Mbogoh, John Muchiri Nyaga, Ken Williams Nyakomitah, and Jackline Lukalo Mwenesi.
In the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC), former Isiolo Woman Representative Rehema Dida Jaldesa was appointed as Chair, with Michael Mbithuka Nzomo joining as a member of the board.
These appointments, made following the requisite Parliamentary approval processes, aim to strengthen oversight and governance in key public institutions.
