Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has dismissed claims from a report by the Controller of Budget (COB) alleging that the county government spent no money on development projects.
In a statement, Governor Sakaja clarified that since July 2024, the Nairobi County Government has allocated nearly KSh 900 million to various development initiatives.
“The development projects include the construction of markets, stadia, roads, and drainage systems,” Sakaja stated.
He highlighted specific expenditures such as KSh 26.1 million for Juja Market, KSh 66.9 million for Mutuini Market, and KSh 12.8 million for a boundary wall at Safe House.
The statement also detailed investments in sports facilities, such as KSh 27.2 million for the rehabilitation of Mwiki Sports Ground and KSh 42 million for the Joe Kadenge Artificial Turf. Additionally, KSh 45.8 million was allocated to construct Woodley Stadium.
In the area of emergency services, KSh 18.9 million was used for fire engine parts, and KSh 14.5 million was spent on renovations at City Hall.
A significant portion of funds, exceeding KSh 100 million, was also directed toward road rehabilitation and maintenance in areas such as Eastleigh, Industrial Area, and the lower CBD.
Governor Sakaja attributed delays in implementing key projects to late disbursement of funds from the national government. He noted that the county received its July allocation in late September, with subsequent months also experiencing similar delays.
“These delays have affected the county’s ability to execute critical projects and deliver timely services,” he said.
Despite these challenges, the county government utilized its internally generated revenue to sustain operations, spending KSh 2.7 billion on personnel, maintenance, and operations. Sakaja added that KSh 844 million had been allocated specifically to development projects aimed at improving Nairobi’s infrastructure and services.
“We are committed to ensuring the growth and progress of this great city despite the financial hurdles,” Governor Sakaja assured.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to overcoming financial challenges and delivering on its development agenda for the residents of Nairobi.
