The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a five-day weather forecast for the period between December 28, 2024, and January 1, 2025.
The forecast indicates that occasional rainfall will occur in parts of the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley as well as the Southeastern Lowlands.
Showers and thunderstorms are also expected in certain areas, although most regions will experience dry weather. Strong southeasterly winds, exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s), are forecasted for Turkana and Marsabit counties.
In the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley, rains will occur in some areas during the mornings, followed by sunny intervals in the afternoons. However, January 1, 2025, will see showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.
Nights in these regions are expected to be partly cloudy. Counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot will experience these conditions, with minimum temperatures around 9°C.
Northwestern areas, including Turkana and Samburu, will have sunny intervals throughout the mornings and afternoons, with partly cloudy nights. Temperatures here are expected to range between 9°C and 36°C.
In Nairobi and the surrounding counties—Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi—weather conditions will mostly include sunny intervals during the day. However, light showers are predicted in a few areas on the afternoon of January 1, 2025. Nights will be cloudy, with temperatures ranging between 11°C and 28°C.
The Northeastern region, covering Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, will experience sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy conditions at night. Temperatures in these areas will vary from 17°C to 37°C.
In the Southeastern Lowlands, which include Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland parts of Tana River County, mornings and afternoons will be sunny.
Showers are expected in some places on January 1, 2025, during the afternoon. Nights will be partly cloudy, with temperatures between 14°C and 31°C.
Finally, the Coastal region will have sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy nights.
Residents are encouraged to plan accordingly, particularly in areas expected to experience rainfall or strong winds. Those in Turkana and Marsabit should exercise caution due to the predicted strong winds. The Kenya Meteorological Department advises the public to stay updated on any changes to the forecast.
