Tragedy struck Luanda, Vihiga County, on Tuesday, December 3, when two people lost their lives and 46 others were hospitalized following a suspected case of food poisoning.
The victims, who were attending a ceremony at a local church, reportedly consumed contaminated rice and beans. According to witnesses, most of the attendees were residents of Luanda and began feeling unwell shortly after the meal. Many lost consciousness and were rushed to Vihiga Sub-County Hospital, where two individuals succumbed while undergoing treatment.
A distraught resident, mourning the loss of a loved one, called on the area MP, Omboko Milemba, to assist in transferring critically affected victims to other hospitals for specialized care.
“I arrived here only to find my brother dead. I don’t even know if his body has been taken to the mortuary. I plead with MP Omboko Milemba to send a rescue team to assist the victims,” the grieving resident said.
In response, MP Milemba confirmed that investigations into the incident had been launched, and he urged the public to remain vigilant during the holiday season.
“We have engaged the area police officers to conduct thorough investigations and provide a report on this matter. I also urge our community coordinators and health promoters to identify and assist those who may still be affected but remain at home,” he stated.
The MP expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those undergoing treatment in various health facilities.
This incident serves as a grim reminder for communities to exercise caution with food preparation and consumption, particularly during gatherings in the festive season.
