Police in Kipkelion East, Kericho County, are investigating a food poisoning incident during a religious celebration in Londiani that left at least 163 people, including children, unwell.
The affected individuals, primarily from Lel Sotet, Masaita, and Kabianga areas, experienced severe vomiting and diarrhea shortly after consuming contaminated mursik (a traditional fermented milk).
Londiani Sub-County Hospital confirmed receiving 176 patients, with 43 admitted on the first day and 20 more the following day. Currently, 63 remain hospitalized.
“We received patients who presented symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting immediately after consuming the milk. Investigations revealed that yeast was added to the fermented milk to accelerate the fermentation process,” said Justus Mosera, a senior clinical officer at the hospital.
The milk, which was supplied by a well-known vendor from the village, is believed to be the source of contamination. Authorities are looking into the vendor’s operations to establish the cause of the poisoning and prevent further incidents.
Hospital officials noted that this was not the first instance of food poisoning in the area, citing a similar case treated at the facility just weeks ago.
Residents have been urged to exercise caution with food and beverage sources to avoid further health risks as investigations continue.
