A group of 32 defense lawyers representing Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale in a military court have refused to proceed with the case following the sentencing of their colleague Eron Kiiza. Kiiza was abruptly sentenced to nine months in Kitalya Prison for contempt of court under contentious circumstances.
Kiiza’s sentencing occurred on Tuesday amidst chaotic scenes at the Makindye-based court martial. Reports indicate that he was manhandled and arrested inside the courtroom as he attempted to take a seat reserved for lawyers ahead of a delayed session. The court issued the sentence without formally charging him with contempt, sparking outrage from the defense team and their supporters.
Prominent defense lawyers, including Kenya’s former Justice Minister Martha Karua and Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago, took a firm stand against the proceedings. They emphasized that the trial could not continue in the absence of Kiiza, whom they argued played a critical role in the defense strategy.
Karua and Lukwago strongly criticized the court’s actions, calling them a breach of fair trial principles and an assault on the legal profession. They argued that Kiiza’s removal undermines the integrity of the judicial process and violates the rights of the accused to adequate legal representation.
