In the early hours of Sunday morning, two men suspected of being thieves were fatally shot during a botched robbery in the Sunton area, Kasarani, Nairobi County. The incident unfolded when a group of three men attempted to rob a victim, sparking a dramatic confrontation with the police.
According to law enforcement officials, the police were on a routine patrol when they heard screams for help from a man who was being attacked by the suspects. Upon reaching the scene, officers found the suspects in the act of robbing the victim, which led to a brief chase.
The police instructed the suspects to surrender, but they ignored the order. One of the robbers was armed with a homemade firearm, prompting one of the officers to open fire in self-defense. Two of the men were killed in the ensuing gunfire, while the third suspect managed to flee the scene, sustaining injuries in the process.
The injured suspect is believed to have escaped in the direction of Shilanga area. In the aftermath of the shooting, the officers recovered a homemade pistol, which had a 9mm round lodged in the chamber, along with a machete.
The bodies of the two deceased men were taken to the City Mortuary for post-mortem examination and identification, while police continue to search for the third suspect.
