Kenya Airways (KQ) has made history by donating a decommissioned Boeing 737-700 aircraft to Mang’u High School in a bid to inspire the next generation of aviation professionals
In a statement, KQ emphasized the significance of the move, describing it as a step toward fostering interest in aviation among young learners. “We are making history with the donation of a Boeing 737 to Mang’u High School, inspiring the next generation of aviators!” the airline stated.
The school’s chief principal, John Kuria, expressed joy at the culmination of a three-year journey to acquire the aircraft. He highlighted the impact this donation will have on aviation studies and training opportunities for students.
“This aircraft is going to promote aviation studies, and we are going to train these young people about the Kenyan and global market in aviation,” Kuria said.
The handover ceremony was graced by distinguished guests, including Archbishop Rev. Philip Anyolo, Dr. Wilfred Kiboro (Nation Media Group Chair), KQ Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer Hellen Mathuka, and Mang’u High School students and alumni.
The donation marks a significant step in linking classroom education with real-world aviation industry practices. The aircraft will serve as a hands-on training resource, equipping students with knowledge and skills to understand the aviation sector locally and globally.
The handover follows the announcement by former Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen in 2023 about plans to gift the decommissioned aircraft to the school. This milestone reinforces Mang’u High School’s legacy as a leader in fostering innovation and excellence in education.
This partnership between Kenya Airways and Mang’u High School sets a precedent for collaborations aimed at nurturing Kenya’s future aviation experts and maintaining the country’s competitive edge in the global aviation market.
