Kitui-born academician and former U.S.-based scholar Japheth Kaluyu has officially announced his intention to run for President in the 2027 general elections. Kaluyu, who previously contested the presidency in 2017 and garnered over 10,000 votes, aims to make a comeback with a focus on people-centered leadership.
Over the weekend, Kaluyu embarked on a meet-the-people tour, holding roadside meetings in Kitui town to rally support for his candidacy. He revealed that his campaign would operate under the banner of the We the People Movement, emphasizing inclusivity and the empowerment of Gen Z.
“I am ready to fight for the country’s big seat. I have the best credentials, having studied and lived abroad, and I have the know-how to make Kenya the best,” Kaluyu stated. He also criticized unnamed aspirants, claiming that they lacked the experience necessary to deliver on their promises.
Kaluyu is positioning himself as a transformative leader who intends to incorporate young people into decision-making processes. He believes this approach will address critical issues such as food insecurity, water scarcity, and poverty, which he says have plagued Ukambani for years due to poor leadership.
“Our undoing is a lack of good leadership. Israel is a desert, yet they export food. Here in Ukambani, we receive two rainy seasons, yet we still struggle with food insecurity. It’s unacceptable to blame this on a lack of rain,” he remarked.
Kaluyu also drew comparisons with regions such as Mt. Kenya and Rift Valley, which he said were thriving due to leaders focused on creating wealth. He called on residents to abandon ineffective leaders and embrace a new generation of leadership that prioritizes sustainable development.
Notably, Kaluyu becomes the second politician from Kitui to declare a presidential bid for 2027, joining Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka in the race to challenge President William Ruto.
