Maina Njenga, the former leader of the Mungiki group, has dismissed allegations that he is President William Ruto’s new political ally in Kenya’s central region.
“I am aligning with Kenyans. Right now, we want unity. I was an Azimio person,” Njenga clarified, distancing himself from any association with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Njenga has recently returned to public attention following the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. This has fueled speculation that he could challenge Gachagua’s influence and steer the politically significant central region in favor of President Ruto.
Speaking on the HOT Breakfast radio show, Njenga refuted accusations made by Gachagua, who had alleged the resurgence of a gang in the region, purportedly sponsored by the State. Gachagua had urged allied Members of Parliament to petition the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding the alleged revival of Mungiki.
“He (Gachagua) wants to take me to The Hague, yet he is toothless. That is just yapping,” Njenga responded dismissively.
Njenga also condemned the growing incidents of abductions across the country, recounting his own harrowing experience.
“I have been a victim of abduction. I was taken in for seven days while planning Raila-led protests. Hooded men seized me just before dinner and drove me 300 kilometers away. It is not a good thing, and the government should put a stop to it,” he said.
Njenga’s remarks come amidst heightened political activity in Kenya, as leaders position themselves for influence in key regions ahead of the next general elections.
