The Standard Group has faced another significant setback with the resignation of its Editor-in-Chief, Ochieng Rapuro.
Rapuro’s departure was formalized on Friday, January 3, in a move that has surprised many within the media industry.
A veteran journalist with decades of experience, Rapuro has been lauded for his impactful storytelling and exceptional newsroom leadership. His exit marks another in a series of high-profile resignations from the company, which is currently navigating financial difficulties and undergoing restructuring to address declining revenues.
The Standard Group, one of Kenya’s oldest and most prominent media organizations, has been facing turbulent times, with layoffs and cost-cutting measures dominating recent headlines.
Rapuro’s journalism career spans numerous leadership roles. Before joining The Standard Group in 2019, he served as the Managing Editor of the Nation Media Group for 13 years, overseeing titles such as The East African and Business Daily. He succeeded Joseph Odindo as Editor-in-Chief of The Standard.
A distinguished academic, Rapuro holds a postgraduate diploma in Mass Communication and Journalism from the University of Nairobi, where he graduated with distinction in 1997. He also earned a Master of Public Administration from the University of Potsdam in Germany in 2003.
