Siaya Governor James Orengo has called on leaders within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to remain true to the party’s core values and principles.
Speaking at the funeral of Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) chairperson Roseline Odede in Uyoma, Rarieda Sub-County, on Saturday, January 18, 2025, Orengo emphasized the importance of safeguarding ODM’s identity.
Orengo’s Call for Integrity
Orengo warned that compromising ODM’s foundational principles for short-term gains would have long-term consequences.
“We [ODM] have an identity. If you lose that identity for easy victories, we are going to pay for it in the future. If you must make compromises, they must be on matters of principle. Do not be part of praise and worship,” Orengo stated.
Orengo praised the late Roseline Odede for her bravery in speaking out against human rights violations, including abductions and extrajudicial killings. He revealed that Odede’s activism had financial repercussions for the KNCHR, yet she stood firm in her convictions.
“When Roseline said no to abductions and extrajudicial killings, they cut funding for her commission, leaving workers unpaid. This is why I stress that sycophancy blinds people to their fundamental principles,” he added.
Sifuna Rebukes ODM Leaders Aligning with Government
ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna also used the occasion to criticize party members aligning themselves with President William Ruto’s government. Sifuna accused them of abandoning their responsibility to hold the government accountable in favor of personal gains.
“We must stop being sycophants. If something is wrong, it is wrong. I will not participate in activities with ODM members who are enjoying the fruits of being in Ruto’s government while undermining efforts to hold the government accountable,” Sifuna declared.
Commitment to ODM’s Vision
Sifuna reaffirmed the need to preserve ODM’s mission as envisioned by party leader Raila Odinga. He shared that Odinga had entrusted him with the responsibility of maintaining the party as a beacon of hope for Kenyans, regardless of Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.
“When you decided to run for the AUC, you told me that ODM must retain its identity as a symbol of hope for Kenyans. This remains my aspiration, whether you succeed or not,” Sifuna stated.
